  • 1st appearance of Moon Knight
  • 9p UK Price Variant, distributed to the United Kingdom
  • Not all price variants are created equal
  • For example, there is a significantly higher value for Marvel books that have a $0.35 cover price during a time when the regular cover price was $0.30
  • In 1976, a portion of Marvel’s books were printed with a higher cover price and distributed to geographically specific areas in the United States to test the market response of a price increase
  • It took over a decade for enough collectors to become aware that these scarce price variants existed which then created demand and positively affected the value
  • Take Star Wars #1 from 1977 for instance. The incredibly scarce $0.35 price variant sold last month for $5,300 graded 7.0
  • The standard $0.30 cover in the same grade sold for $150
  • Learn more about the Price Variants under the Subscriber Category ‘CHECK YOUR COLLECTION’
  • The value of Marvel’s Bronze Age PVs has gradually increased over time
  • Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for British Price Variants (UKPVs), Australian Price Variants (APVs) and most Canadian Price Variants (CPVs) although there are some exceptions to the latter CPVs in very high grades, though inconsistent from sale to sale
  • BUT now, there seems to be an exception when it comes to the UK Price Variant of Werewolf By Night #32
  • This week, a 9.4 graded copy sold for $13,600 (GBP 9,999)
  • To put this in perspective, the all-time high sale of the regular US comic in the same grade 9.4, is $5,300
  • Now, are we expected to believe that the UKPV is worth $8,300 more than the U.S. edition in the same grade?
  • Well, the scarcity of the UKPV certainly seems legitimate. There are only 5 graded 9.4s versus 204 of the standard
  • In all grades there are a total of 3,383 standard copies of Werewolf By Night #32 whereas UKPVs total only 127
  • Experts agree that UKPVs amount to only 1-2% of their U.S. counterparts
  • Could this be the beginning of an emerging trend for UKPVs? Is this an anomaly? Or something more nefarious?
  • By comparison, there are 186 $0.30 price variants versus over 7,000 UKPVs. There's a lot of potential profit in UKPVs if they catch on but the conversation has scarcely even began
  • And it does raise suspicion that a 9.2 UKPV listed for sale on eBay for $4,000 hasn’t been purchased yet since there are only 3 copies graded 9.2 on the census versus 5 of the 9.4 that sold for $13k+
  • Scarcity is a factor but in scenarios like this, perhaps logic should override the grading census
  • Why would a seller go through the trouble of shipping a UKPV overseas for grading if there's little demand for them? The census might not be giving us a true picture of scarcity
  • While were on the topic of Werewolf By Night #32, 4 out of 5 copies graded 9.4 sold for $10k and higher in 2020. Two such sales occurred in December overtaking the previous all-time high of $7,655 in 2018

  • The show was not entirely well-received with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 37% but the MCU could turn that around and let's not rule out the possibility of Shang-Chi hinting at Iron Fist
  • This is a property that has a lot of potential for Marvel as it is set-up for any number of actors to step into the role as there have been multiple Iron Fists in the mythology
  • In 9.8 and many other grades, the value of this issue has dropped back down to pre-Netflix days
