  • 40-page printer's proof of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 (1984)
  • A printer's proof is a sample that is printed to examine the correctness of the issue before printing the entire run
  • This one-of-a-kind, historical proof was found in a small print shop in Biddeford, Maine a few years after the publication of issue #1, after the Turtles had already exploded in popularity
  • The men who found it traded it to Downeast Comics which operated between the years of 1986 - 1994, in Brunswick, Maine
  • The owner paid for the proof with store stock and held onto it before auctioning it on Comic Link in 2020 for $12,472 with 77 bids

  • First let’s look at some vital statistics with print runs and graded copies tracked by the CGC Census (unsigned):
  • First Printing – print run 3,000: 814 total graded with 28 in 9.8 (only 4 9.8s more than 4 years ago)
  • Second Printing - 6,000 print run: 382 total graded with 6 in 9.8 (majority are graded 9.4)
  • Third printing – print run 35,000: 789 total graded with 54 in 9.8 (majority are graded 9.4)

  • Fifth printing: 95 total graded with in 9.8 (majority are graded 9.6)
  • This week, the Fall Comic Link auctions produced some impressive sales with a 7.0 graded Turtles book being no exception. Highlights from the auction and this week’s eBay sales:
  • CGC 7.0 sold for $15,600 (previous: 9,600 in Sept)
  • CGC 6.5 sold for $11,350 (previous high: $6k in May)
  • Second Printing Highlights:
  • CGC 8.0 sold for $3k (previous high: $2,500 in Oct)
  • CGC 7.5 sold for $2,100 (previous high: $585 in 2018)
  • A 90-day high ungraded copy was scooped from eBay for $2,500
  • Third Printing highlights:
  • A 9.6 sold for over $2k in October. This week two more 9.6 sold for over $2k
  • Third printing has high volatility in pricing with sales yo-yoing from $500-$1500 from one to the next
  • CGC 7.0 sold for $1,055 (previous high: $335 in August)
  • TIP: MyComicShop looks to be a bit slow on the price adjustments and have a more shallow pool of bidders, showing multiple recorded sales of 30% - 75% lower than other certified sales. This isn’t a sponsored ad but it might be worth your time to take a glance on their site before making a big purchase
  • Six printings exist as do counterfeits. First printings are unique in that they have an advertisement for Gobbledygook #1 on the inside back cover and are identified in the Indicia.

  • First Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles one-shot spin-off
  • 1st appearance of Casey Jones
  • Why are Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic books SO popular right now?
  • The reason why is because the creative team behind the Turtles delivered a one-two punch of innovation that we hadn't experienced to such a degree since the Turtles donned their multi-colored bandanas
  • In July 2019, the 5th turtle, a mutated human named Jennika was introduced
  • The second event that created a Turtle fandom frenzy began with the marketing and publication of The Last Ronin #1
  • The promise of a post-apocalyptic, darker tale of a lone-surviving turtle connected with a more mature audience who grew up with the Turtles but mostly grew away from the safely navigable, familiar waters of TMNT
  • The creators breathing new life into the comic book foundation of their empire caused high-key turtle books to skyrocket
  • This super-charged renewed interest cascaded down to much of the Mirage, TMNT Adventures and IDW line of comics, causing a handful of books to spike
  • Raphael #1 has enjoyed a spot on the Hot 10 for 6 weeks now and continues to turn in notable sales week after week:
  • This week, there were 15 ungraded sales which is well over average
  • Two of these books became the 2nd and 3rd highest dollar, ungraded copies sold, eclipsed only by the $2,025 auction from November 5th
  • Twice this week, a CGC 9.2 broke past the $1,000 milestone with a new all-time high of $1,200, bypassing the previous record of $993
  • Most impressive though is the CGC 9.6 2nd printing $700 sale (previous record: $130)
  • The 2nd printing has been lost in the flurry of so many Turtle books-a-poppin' and as of this list being written, there are no 2nd print graded books for sale
  • There are 8 CGC 9.8 graded copies on the census so expect a real barn-burner if or when a 9.8 goes up for sale

  • 1st appearance of Bebop, Rocksteady, Krang
  • What a week for this book. Copies were selling everywhere. We've got records in multiple grades and multiple editions. Oh my!
  • Let's start with the regular edition which set an all-time high for this edition as a CGC 9.8 copy finished within spitting distance of 4 figures to close out at $950 (up from $600 which was a record set just a week ago).
  • Meanwhile the 9.6 regular edition was busy jumping from $380 (a record for that grade that was also set last week) to $530 and then to $800 this week.
  • These jumps are insane and show massive collector FOMO. Get in before this book follows TMNT #1 1st print and Raphael #1 is the thinking. But that's not all. Order now and get mega price jumps for the Newsstand.
  • Last week a 9.8 Newsstand set the all-time high for any edition of this book at $1,200. This week another 9.8 Newsstand obliterated that price with a monster $2,600 sale.
  • The 9.6 Newsstand was moving too, almost doubling from $450 to $800.
  • We also saw a Canadian Price Variant hit $400 in 9.6 (up from $342).
  • And a raw Canadian Newsstand end on eBay at $485.
  • These kinds of rapid price changes across all grades and editions are rare even when there's a big movie announcement causing it.
  • Here collectors are simply Turtle obsessed. These last few months have been crazy for Turtles books.
  • TMNT #1 first printings doubled, and in some cases tripled. Now you can barely even find copies for sale.
  • Second, third and fourth printings of #1, high grade copies of TMNT #2, original art from the early issues and even the printers proof to #1 all set massive new record prices in recent weeks.
  • Modern collectors are going Turtles crazy for The Last Ronin storyline.
  • Right behind the first print of #1 in demand is Raphael #1 (see below) and it seems collectors have settled on this being the second most important Turtles book.
  • And now, right behind that, is TMNT Adventures #1.
  • A little pat on old @x's back as he told you this book and Raphael were going to blow up when we started seeing TMNT #1 prices jump up months ago.
  • Turtles have been popular for so many decades and in so many formats (comics, toys, movies, cartoons, more movies, more cartoons, animated movies, comics again) that the fan base is enormous, passionate and hungry for the OG Turtles comics.
  • This won't end here so keep an eye on Turtles #2.
  • Comic book adaptation of the animated series
  • 1st comic book appearance of the Turtles in their color-identifying masks.

  • Premiere issue of a 5-issue series
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird revisited an outline written in 1987 about the lone survivor of the four turtles, set 30 years in the future
  •  Originally solicited by IDW for August, the issue's launch was pushed to October after a promotional ashcan preview had received negative feedback regarding the interior art. The decision was made to delay the release of the first issue and overhaul the illustrations with a new art team
  •  The delay resulted in an extended promotional cycle, hype and demand that stores attempted to respond to by increasing their orders but were unable to due to IDW's printing practices
  • IDW is one of the only publishers to print their books overseas (that's why their books have that weird paper) and have to place their order with an international printer considerably earlier
  • Comic shop orders were allocated by Diamond Distributors meaning stores received approximately 17% fewer copies than what they expected to receive
  • Regardless, Last Ronin #1 led to a reported print run of 130,000 copies, a massive number by modern and independent standards
  • Oversized comic does not fit in conventional modern age bag and board
