  • 1st appearance¬†of Terry¬†McGinnis in a comic book
  • It is important to be aware of the differences between several editions of this book that exist
  • Direct Edition - as seen in the image with DIRECT EDITION printed in the UPC box
  • Newsstand Edition - UPC box in the lower-left corner, dated March 1999 with an original retail price of $1.99
  • Promotional Edition - 'FREE Special Origin Issue' printed below the DC logo with a white rectangle in the lower-left corner intended for stores to stamp their logo. Dated June 1999 with a Jell-O advertisement on the back cover
  • Six Flags Promotional Edition - displays a Six Flags amusement park logo printed in the white rectangle. Dated October 1999 with a PlayStation advertisement on the back cover
  • Third Printing Promotional Edition - dated July 2000 with a Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker DVD advertisement on the back cover
  • [November 2020 - it is rumored that Warner Bros. is interested in Timoth√©e Chalamet for the role of Terry McGinnis for a Batman Beyond project. There is also speculation that Michael Keaton will reprise his role as an elder Bruce Wayne mentoring Terry McGinnis]
  • ūüďą +150% copies sold versus the previous week after confirmation that Keaton will reprise the Batman role and speculation that it could be for Batman Beyond

  • 1st full appearance of John Constantine, Hellblazer
Low $20
Mid $60
High $200
  • Newsstand edition
  • 1st full appearance of Carnage
  • Carnage will make his feature film debut in the upcoming Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage
  • Newsstand copies of this issue are abundant yet they continue to sell for a significant premium
  • Demand is incredibly strong for Carnage‚Äôs 1st appearance and manages to outstrip the massive supply of this 90s icon
  • To date, non-keys have not seen a difference in price between Direct Market and Newsstand editions
  • Newsstands are a fast growing trend and are extremely rare especially from 2012-2014 when distribution was winding down and limited to just Barnes & Noble and Books A Million
  • CGC does not currently break out Newsstand editions making it difficult to accurately pin down numbers
  • Unlike direct market (comic shop) orders, Newsstand sales were returnable and unsold copies were destroyed
  • Current data places Newsstand print runs at approximately 30% for the Copper age (and as low as 1% in 2014)
  • Additionally, Newsstand editions are notoriously difficult to find in high grade. Distribution, display and browsing habits are very different from direct market systems meaning oftentimes, issues are carelessly handled
  • Experts have tracked a ratio of 1 in 4 for CGC 9.8 Newsstand editions vs direct market for Amazing Spider-Man #361 meaning it is seeing gains despite being one of the easiest Newsstand books to find in high grade (others like Amazing Spider-Man #298 are closer to 1 in 100)
  • Many sellers are still unaware of the difference between direct and Newsstand editions and newly discovered Newsstand copies can still be found at direct market prices

Mid $30

  • 1st full appearance¬†of Silk
  • ¬† Cindy Moon (aka Silk) is a Korean-Ameican girl who was bitten by the same radioactive spider as Peter Parker
  • This variant is one of the books rumored to part of a very large stash of books obtained through questionable means by someone close to the manufacturing¬†and transportation of comics
Low $55
Mid $165
High $550

  • 1st appearance of Em Jay Watson (Earth-65) who later bonds with the Carnage symbiote in the King In Black event
  • [December 2020 - picking up momentum due to Spider-Verse movie speculation]
Low $450
Mid $1.4k
High $4.8k
  • 1st appearance of Miyamoto Usagi aka Usagi¬†Yojimbo (Yojimbo is Japanese for bodyguard).
  • This week's number 10 is another example of¬†the movement brewing of collectors gravitating towards 80s and 90s low print run, beloved independent books.
  • Partly fueled by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (which is certainly part of the group though it's sheer popularity and media ubiquity transcends it).
  • Partly by potential media adaptations.
  • Partly because collectors have realized¬†just how rare some of these books are in the highest grades.
  • And partly because a lot of them are now entering their¬†25-30 year nostalgia cycles (they've made it through the threshold where many once¬†hot¬†characters disappear and are now becoming iconic).
  • ¬†Albedo¬†#2 is often brought up in the same breath as TMNT and for good reason. While not as popular to the mainstream just yet, it is catching up quickly in the price department.
  • And file this under 'did you know?' for when you need to¬†impress your friends or lock in that date: The turtles appeared as guest characters in Usagi¬†Yojimbo Vol. 8. Additionally, Miyamoto Usagi and other characters from the Yojimbo universe have made guest appearances in TMNT animated shows.
  • A rare book that does not see sales very often saw one monster sale this week.
  • ¬†A CGC 9.0 copy traded hands for an new all-time high in grade of $5,500 (up almost 50% from last year when a copy sold for $4,050).
  • As I said when this was on the list last time, expect the 9.0+ range to see massive gains when copies surface. And look out for fireworks if a 9.8 copy comes to market. The last sale of $28,800 will likely seem like a bargain.
  • There are only¬†10¬†blue label 9.8s making this book in this grade an event every time a copy comes to market.
  • For context, even the famously rare first printing of the 1st app of the turtles counts 28 blue label 9.8 copies.
  • Further driving collectors to grab copies asap is the upcoming¬†Netflix animated series announced in July. Produced by¬†James Wan of Aquaman, Saw & Conjuring fame, the show titled Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles follows a¬†teenage descendent of Usagi Yojimbo.
  • Other books from the 80's/90's independent comics explosion that have caught collector's eyes include¬†Bone 1 (1st Bone with just 16 9.8 blue labels on the CGC census),¬†The Crow 1 (1st Crow ongoing. Though Caliber Presents 1 will likely overtake it soon. Is there any other character in comics whose first ongoing is more expensive than their¬†1st appearance?) & Comico Primer #2 (1st Grendel with 36 copies).
  • Books of this era have very small print runs and were¬†mostly self distributed making surviving copies rare with high grade copies having become incredibly rare. Despite having a print run of 2,000,¬†Albedo¬†#2 has only 177 universal graded copies present on the CGC census.
  • The closest contemporary¬†comparison¬†is The Hero Trade which was also self distributed, has a small print run and has famously rooted itself onto the Hot 10 for much longer than any comic from the Golden Age thru today
