Black Mask

Creation & Design

Black Mask was created by writer Doug Moench and artist Tom Mandrake, first appearing in Batman #386. He was designed to be a new villain for Batman, representing the criminal underworld of Gotham.

Roman Sionis was born into a wealthy family but became disillusioned with his privileged life. After a series of personal failures, he turned to crime and adopted the persona of Black Mask, using a mask made from the wood of his family's coffin factory.
