American Splendor #1

Synopsis

Following the success of his critically praised, top-selling graphic novel THE QUITTER, Harvey Pekar returns to Vertigo with an all-new 4-issue AMERICAN SPLENDOR miniseries, celebrating 30 years of the series that first showed how, as Harvey says, "ordinary life can be pretty complex stuff." First appearing in 1976, AMERICAN SPLENDOR rose "from the streets of Cleveland" to change the way comics readers and creators viewed the potential of their medium. The series won an American Book Award and became an Oscar-nominated film. In Vertigo's AMERICAN SPLENDOR, Harvey is joined by an all-star roster of artists from both indie and mainstream comics. The first issue features QUITTER artist Dean Haspiel illustrating "The Day's Highlights," while Ty Templeton (BIGG TIME, BATMAN ADVENTURES) portrays Harvey's account of his relationship with his parents after the events of THE QUITTER. Also in this issue, AMERICAN SPLENDOR veterans Greg Budgett and Gary Dumm depict Harvey's struggles with an acerbic flight attendant and Hilary Barta (TOMORROW STORIES) shows us what Harvey considers a "delicacy." Now, three decades after his self-published debut, Harvey Pekar proves that while his life has changed, his ability to find the exceptional in the everyday has only grown better with time.
