As Ellis runs missions with the Hunter-Killers, he is disturbed by the fact that they seem to kill rather than capture all of the ultra-sapiens they encounter in the field. This is especially true when they confront and kill a brother and sister who have disguised themselves as preschoolers. This leads to Ellis having an interview with Morningstar where he tells the young man how they brought in and trained a powerful and unstable young ultra named Samantha Argent. Morningstar puts Ellis under hypnosis to try and discover some details about his mysterious past.
