THE GRAVEYARD GAMBIT On individual cases, the Justice League members mysteriously encounter both humans and inanimate objects which take on the appearance of gigantic chess pieces. Whale-hunting sailors become pawns before Aquaman's eyes; Atom rounds up kidnappers, who transform into a bishop and more pawns: a renegade biker gang leader becomes a knight while fighting Green Arrow and Black Canary; and missile-firing rooks attack Superman and Batman. Zatanna, onboard the JLA satellite, calls a meeting to investigate the obviously related cases, but unknown to all, the bizarre happenings are the result of a life-and-death chess match between Despero and J'onn J'onzz, the Martian Manhunter.
