The magician's apprentice Pug is infatuated with the Princess Carline, but he has difficulty enjoying her surly attitude as the two of them ride together on horseback during her leisure time. When the two stop for a picnic, however, they are attacked by trolls, who are far too much for the young teenagers to handle on their own! But Pug has a power inside himself unlike anything the world of Midkemia has ever seen, and when the crisis causes it to release, the trolls are the least of his worries!
