Trapped behind Nazi lines, Fury's left eye is injured when a grenade explodes too close to it. He rejects an operation that would preserve its vision; such surgery would keep him out of action for a full year at just the time when the Howlers need him most.His eye heals, but he is now guaranteed one day to lose its vision. (This happens in 1964.)
