Synopsis

Set in 1775, Argent is attracted to and preying upon the American Revolutionary Army outside of the British held Fort Quebec. Argent now sees himself as the tool of Maslun, a spirit of vengeance and death. He is only partly mentally aware, and mostly has the mind of a beast. The soldiers outside Fort Quebec are waiting for reinforcements in a terrible winter. As Argent kills off the most venal soldiers one by one, fear runs rampant among the others. There are many tensions among them, especially among the white soldiers and their Native American servants and trackers. The white soldiers insult, beat, and rape the Native Americans with impunity. Finally three of them decide to strike back. Charlie Mantooth, Billy Cloudleg, and Owlheart Louise decide to try to use Billy's shaman background to control Argent and have him attack the other soldiers. When this doesn't work right away, they turn on Louise and make it look like she's in danger so Argent feels like he has to protect her. Some soldiers arrive just then, and Argent does indeed show up. He slaughters the soldiers and the Native Americans alike. The spirits of the dead come to inhabit Argent's mind, and wake him up from his animal self. He is once again in control of himself. He decides that his time in the wilderness is over, and it is time to seek out cities.
