Jeff Murphy had died on August 12, 1983 when his Sykorski helicopter lost air pressure and plummeted to earth. Much to his surprise, he awoke again in the land of the dead where Aer, the Elemental Lord of Air, recruited him. Jeff was reborn as Vortex, a super-powered member of the Elementals. His was the power over air: he could fly through it with a thought, and could blast it with concussive force sufficient to level buildings. Best yet, as an Elemental, Jeff never ages and his body regenerates spontaneously after injury. Unless something really catastrophic happened, Jeff need never die again. In the first issue, Vortex strikes out on his own to help the Choktaw Indians. Their land is being polluted by the dumping of toxic waste, and when they try to fight back someone—or something—has summoned the dead to frighten them into submission!
