  • The deal with 20th Century Fox (renamed 20th Century Studios/Touchstone Television) cost over $71 billion dollars to own the rights to the two key Marvel properties plus Deadpool, the Predator and Alien franchises, Avatar, Planet of the Apes and others
  • With Deadpool 3 already far enough in the works to have writers hired on to script the movie, collectors are pulling the trigger on these books that are experiencing steady gains week after week throughout November
  • CGC 6.5 sold for $20,400 (previous record: $14,500 in Aug 2020)
  • CGC 5.0 sold for $13,000 (previous record: $9,000 in 2019)

  • First let us celebrate the Vision's 1st appearance in Avengers #57 for breaking an all time high in 9.8 this week with a $26,400 sale (previous record $21,251 in October - one month ago)
  • You might be wondering why X-Men #4 is on the list instead of Avengers #57
  • Although Avengers #57 has excelled past its highest grade two times over the past month, it struggles to step outside of the shadow cast by the Age of Ultron despite Vision being a persistent presence in the MCU including the upcoming Wanda/Vision Disney+ series
  • Avengers #57 in mid to lower grades have a poor perception of growth due to being stuck in a range of values far below their 2015/2016 sales
  • The Scarlet Witch's first appearance here on the other hand has demurely broken records with modest and consistent gains:
  • CGC 9.2 sold for $9,900 (previous record: $9,500 in Sept 2020)
  • CCG 4.5 sold for $1,400 (previous record: $1350)
  • CGC 3.0 sold for $1,297 (previous record: $1,088 last week)
  • Mid-to lower grade X-Men #4 between 2.0 and 6.0 graded books have increased significantly since the beginning of the year, doubling in value in some cases which looks to be a more reasonable range for this issue considering the impact the character has had on the MCU

  • 1st appearance and origin of Daredevil
  • 1st appearance of Foggy Nelson and Karen Page
  • According to Agent X:
  • Could this be the most undervalued book in comics? There's certainly a case to be made for it.
  • It is after all part of the legendary set of Marvel books from the early 60's (like X-Men #1 and Amazing Fantasy #15) that introduced the key characters and foundational elements of the Marvel universe as we know it today.
  • But it's fair market value is currently lagging behind every other book in that class and doing so in every grade.
  • An opportunity even if the book was the least popular or the least important of the group but when that era is ranked by the media, Daredevil #1 is more often in the middle of the pack or higher.
  • So as they say on Million Dollar Listing, "let's look at the comps" (what? No, I don't watch reality tv. I watch sports bro. I just heard my girlfriend talk about it. What's my gf's name? um....dare...lean devil-one).
  • Amazing Fantasy #15 sits at approx. $177,000 (in 8.0 grade), $48,000 (6.0), $22,400 (4.0) & $15,000 (2.0).
  • Fantastic Four #1 sits at approx. $80,000 (in 8.0), $29,000 (6.0), $14,500 (4.0) & $9,000 (2.0).
  • Incredible Hulk #1 sits at approx. $91,000 (in 8.0), $26,000 (6.0), $13,000 (4.0) & $9,200 (2.0).
  • Journey Into Mystery #83 sits at approx. $31,200 (in 8.0), $10,500 (6.0), $6,300 (4.0) & $3,400 (2.0).
  • Tales of Suspense #39 sits at approx. $27,000 (in 8.0), $15,000 (6.0), $7,250 (4.0) & $3,000 (2.0).
  • X-Men #1 sits at approx. $30,000 (in 8.0), $13,500 (6.0), $7,000 (4.0) & $4,000 (2.0).
  • Now let's take a look at how Daredevil #1 fares.
  •  Daredevil #1 sits at approx. $6,600 (in 8.0), $3,500 (6.0), $1,900 (4.0) & $1,100 (2.0).
  • Many multiples behind the other books in its class. In some cases as much as 15x cheaper!
  • Forget the fact that the price of a 2.0 Fantastic Four #1 could buy both an 8.0 and a 6.0 DD1. That's maybe not a fair comparison (despite the fact that neither are in the MCU currently) because historically FF1 has been more sought after. But look at JIM 83 where a 4.0 is the same price as a DD1 8.0.
  •  Even Avengers #1 which features no major 1st appearances is trading at higher levels. $14,400 (in 8.0), $7,500 (6.0), $2,600 (4.0) & $1,500 (2.0).
  • We've talked FMV, let's talk supply. Some argue that DD1 had a higher print run which has resulted in more supply today. This is a long held misconception and one that the CGC Census easily puts to rest.
  • DD1 sits in the middle of the pack in terms of number of copies graded by CGC with lower graded quantities than both X-Men #1 and Avengers #1 for instance.
  • Spider-Man, the X-Men and Fantastic Four all have many famous runs and a slew of must read stories.
  • But beyond one or two defining stories (Michelinie & Layton on Iron Man, Simonson on Thor, Hulk trying to sleep with She-Hulk) can the same be said for any of the rest?
  • Yes, for Daredevil. The depth of characterization and breath of storytelling rival and often surpass many of the greats with all time runs from Frank Miller, Brian Michael Bendis, Mark Waid, Ed Brubaker and Kevin Smith just to name a few.
  • All of this is coming to a head for horn head as we're seeing collectors finally turn their gaze to DD1.
  • A few weeks ago we saw a new high sale in grade for a 9.0 at $18,000 (up from a previous high of $13,200). At the time I issued an @x tip to keep an eye on this book as it was due a correction.
  •  This week we saw new all-time highs in several grades including 7.0 ($4988 up from $4,780), 5.5 twice this week ($3,000 and then $3,219 up from $2,663), 4.5 ($2,300 up from $2,150) & 3.0 ($1,750 up from $1,700).
  • But every collector knows, the MCU is what really blows books up. Just look at the X-Men which sits at approx. $16,000 (8.0), $6,300 (6.0), $3,100 (4.0), $1,900 (2.0) in 2017 (the year before Disney bought Fox).
  • Those numbers have doubled on the news that the X-Men will appear in the MCU. They've doubled before the characters even actually appear.
  • So what's happened to Daredevil since Marvel got the rights back from Netflix? Nothing right?.
  • NOT TRUE.
  • You see most collectors are unaware that Marvel does not yet actually have the rights back from Netflix and assume that because there is no news on the MCU side that Daredevil is not part of Kevin Feige's plan.
  • The truth is Netflix included a clause in their agreement with Marvel in which there was a period where the rights were frozen if Marvel terminated the relationship.
  • That period ends this December. That's right, Daredevil returns to Marvel and is available for the MCU in 2021 (in just over 60 days).
  • Happy Hunting.
