Key Facts

Classic story about an atomic bomb that was originally meant to be published in Superman #34 but was delayed due to government intervention resulting from heightened security during World War II

The first page of the comic book depicts Lex Luthor unleashing a weapon of mass destruction on Superman with the following text:

Now It Can Be Told. Due to wartime censorship restrictions on subjects dealing with Atomic experiments (see Time [Magazine], Aug. 20 1945, p. 72 and Newsweek, Aug 20 1945 p. 68), this story was not previously released to the public. You'll understand why as you read about the astounding weapon that Superman's ancient foe, Luthor, turns loose against a city in..."The Battle of the Atoms!"

Retailer appreciation ‘Thank You’ edition

⚠️ Buyer Beware: there are listings of a sketch cover described as a one per store “Thank You” variant but not all stores have received these YET. Current auction bidding may be higher due the unknown scope of inventory that hasn't been shipped/received or graded

⚠️ Additionally, the standard cover A that was communicated by the creator as under-printed has been spotted by community members in Wal-Mart store multipacks

🥈 Runner-Up: New High [Previous High]

9.9 sold for $100 [No Previous Data]

The CGC Census reports three copies in 9.9, and none higher

Two copies in 9.8 have sold in 2025, one for $475 and the other for $400 so it is evident that the 9.9 sale of $100 was a good bargain if the value of this issue holds up
